Well, it lockup twice this morning and that was after I ran
    Code:
    sudo service cron stop
so this wasn't the problem. The good news is I just got my new SSD this morning and I am going to start fresh with a new install. Can't get any cleaner that that.
Thanks for all the help on this one, I picked up some nice tips.

    • run the "top" command, to see what is burning up cycles or memory, and kill that process through the "sudo killall -9 [whatever_the_process_is]" command, or
    • restart the system by typing "sudo shutdown now"

If you can't get to a terminal, have you tried the "RSEIUB" method? That had a MUCH lower chance of breaking something than simply killing the computer by holding down the power button.
Again you been a big help on this. I printed out some info so if I have lockups again I will try this.
    Thanks again

Not as helpful as I should have been. "sudo shutdown now" will shut down your system. to make it reboot, type "sudo shutdown -r now".

Also, there was a typo when I gave the alt+sysreq+REISUB command. I placed the "S" in the wrong place. Again, it should be REISUB, not RSEIUB as I had typed it. It can be remembered as "Restart Even If Something's Utterly Broken".

Actually I caught them both. I remembered the -r and I saw the typo when I went to the link.
Almost done with my backup and am getting ready to switch the drives and do the fresh install.

I can't believe I am up and running already. It only took about 30 minutes to install and do all the updates. Even got my wireless going. Right now I am restoring all my backups. I still need to re-install all my apps, but I have a list of them in Ubuntuone. I have that all setup also. It nice to have all my emails and documents on line.

Here we go again. Everything new and I had this same thing happen again.
By the way the Alt+Ctrl+F1 go to a terminal and ran the sudo shutdown -r now, entered my password and nothing happen. Hit the Alt+Ctrl+F7 came back to the locked screen where nothing would work to shutdown or exit apps.
Did the Alt and SysRq key combo and went through the REISUB, and everything worked except the "B" so when I just hit the power button it went off. Restarted and everything is working again. I will try later to lock it up again.

    Hi

Did you have a kernel upgrade around the time the hard locks started ?

Have you tried to boot into an old kernel and see if you still get the same lookups ?

    Kind regards

Re: A almost hard lock in Ubuntu 12.04.

This was a fresh install on a new SSD. No problems with the install.
OK, it just happen again 20 minutes ago. Here is what I was doing. Moving the scroll bar in Chrome Browser. It seem if I try doing things to fast it will lock up. Look at the last thing in the syslog file:
    Jul 22 07:56:56 irv-Inspiron-1521 signond[2264]: signonsessioncore.cpp 832 processError
    Jul 22 07:56:56 irv-Inspiron-1521 signonpluginprocess: remotepluginprocess.cpp 523 startTask operation is completed
    Jul 22 07:56:56 irv-Inspiron-1521 signond[2264]: signonsessioncore.cpp 957 startNewRequest the data queue is EMPTY!!!

Re: A almost hard lock in Ubuntu 12.04.

    Hi

If you can REISUB then it's less lightly to be a kernel lock up.

As for the reboot problem, have you looked at changing the grub reboot parameter ?

    Code:
    reboot=<method>
where <method> is the rebbot method.

I'll dig out the options for you and edit this post.

    EDIT:
    /* reboot=b[ios] | s[mp] | t[riple] | k[bd] | e[fi] [, [w]arm | [c]old] | p[ci]
warm Don't set the cold reboot flag
cold Set the cold reboot flag
bios Reboot by jumping through the BIOS (only for X86_32)
smp Reboot by executing reset on BSP or other CPU (only for X86_32)
triple Force a triple fault (init)
kbd Use the keyboard controller. cold reset (default)
acpi Use the RESET_REG in the FADT
efi Use efi reset_system runtime service
pci Use the so-called "PCI reset register", CF9
force Avoid anything that could hang.
    */
    END OF EDIT.

singnond is the single sign on framework

I believe signond may be used by UbuntuOne.

I am not sure if this has been suggested yet but disable UbuntuOne.

    Kind regards

Now it will lockup even when I am not playing a video when I have once open the Chrome browser, but if I don't open it, it does not lockup. I believe the problem is with the Chrome browser or one of the addons.

I also notice that if you play videos with commercials when it comes back to the video the video is back and the sound keeps playing. Now this only happen in Chrome Browser and on the Chromebook which uses the Chrome browser. I believe it is a bug in the browser.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Many report on this problem connected to Ivy bridge.
24 ours ago I followed the solution in #999910 tread and upgraded my kernel to 3.2.0-27-generic #43-Ubuntu (12.04).
So far it looks god, no freeze, but i am not convinced yet.
Hope this gives you some new input to your problem.
