I just made a fresh install of Kubuntu 12.04 over 11.10 and lost 5 GHz capability (worked perfectly and out of the box in 11.10)

Seems like I have been bitten by this bug:

But the "solution" seems a bit drastic - compiling your own custom kernel... don't really want to open that can of worms.

Apart from installing 11.10 again, is there anything else I could try?
