Install CCSM, in there you will find an option to hide the launcher (taskbar as you call it).

install CCSM (Compiz Config Settings Manager) by running

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install compiz compizconfig-settings-manger compiz-plugins-extra
then run by typing in a terminal

    Code:
    ccsm

I downloaded CCSM, but how do I make the launcher vanish? There are lots of options to choose from, and it says I can make the desktop unusable, so which option should I choose from?
