delete icon from desktop w/o disappearing from unity?

I want to pin a shortcut to the unity dock. I tried to do this straight from the dash but it was just a blank space. The program still opened, but there was no icon. I then successfully moved the shortcut to my dock, but now cannot remove the shortcut from my desktop without deleting it from my dock as well.

did you try right click and "Lock to launcher" ?

Well it worked... But then I uninstalled Unity anyway so.....
