Question xubuntu hardware detection same as ubuntu?

Since installing ubuntu 12.04 on my desktop and discovering driver support for my old geforce4 ti4200 is discontinued (apparently the nvidia driver issue is caused by updated xorg in 12.04) I have decided to try xubuntu or some other lightweight distro's.

I am wondering if im going to encounter the same incompatability on other distros based on ubuntu?

Is my best option to look to older versions?

    Cheers

Yes, the difference is in the desktop environment. Since Xubuntu uses the same kernel and same Xserver, you will have the same issue with trying to use the legacy 96-x series nvidia driver: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/948053
