7 hours works best for me.
Use whatever OS or desktop works for you. Dual boot or use VMs if you want. Backup your computer regularly, and definitely before upgrading, partitioning, or installing an OS.

I have to be up at 7:15 am every weekday morning. It's now 01:18am, so probably about slightly less than 6 hours for me (and I still have beer to drink, before bed)
