Initilazation failed after upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04

Thanks, say42! This was able to get me rolling again. I have more issue to resolve but at least I have a "working" environment.

I didn't need a live CD either. I just did the following:

mount -o remount,rw /
apt-get install -f
