Mac file recovery using Ubuntu

Hi All, My G/F has a macbook Air and has an ext. hd. formatted in HFS, the problem is that she has deleted some files accidentally and cant recover them, and now the mac is playing up, i know , surprise surprise, and we cant use it to recover the deleted files, so is there a program , preferably with a GUI , so she can see what to do , that we can use to recover the files on my linux box ?
