    Post Program Ideas

I am new to programming under Ubuntu, and I wanted to create a program to try it out. I have no (good) ideas and I was wonderng if anyone had any requests. Nothing is too hard, except maybe by physical limitation: no dish-washing, coffee-delivering, teleporting, etc. (sorry!)

I'm using Quickly, by the way. More info on Quickly: http://developer.ubuntu.com/get-started/

how about an antivirus program, something different from clam, or perhaps a parental control program.

How about a universal printer driver?
There is always a way, but it might not be the best way, or your way!

Yes...with a kick-*** soundtrack, like the good old DOS games used to have!

Anyways, you said yourself to be "new to programming" on Ubuntu...does that mean you are new to programming in general, or just new to using Linux as a platform?

How about a specialist internet radio client?
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.

    Find something that niggles.

Also, new projects aren't necessarily the best, unless you've found an obvious gap. Try contributing to a small project to start with, and work up to bigger things. It really depends on your style, you might like to work on something like libreoffice or like apache, depending on your preference.

I have found that Ubuntu is very lacking in the parental controls department. This would be a great idea. I have no Ubuntu programming experience (though I do know Python) and have no starting point for how the program will work, or any of the coding. I take back the "nothing is too hard" that I said earlier. I will do my best!

UPDATE: Nevermind, there is this. Moving on...

    Re: Program Ideas

Now that file notes have been abandoned by Nautilus and the rest of Ubuntu, users have no way to add comments and descriptions to their files. An easy, built-in way to add such info to files and directories is with user extended attributes, accessible via CLI or with the nice eiciel GUI utility.

Problem is, there is no way to search, filter and categorize these attributes and the files attached to them. A graphical tool to do that would be awesome!
