Thank you all for your very kind comments. You've made my day! I am very gratified when a new user has his/her wireless working and begins to really appreciate Ubuntu Linux.

is it possible for you to switch channels on either the wireless or the bluetooth ?
maybe there is an overlapping conflict

Awesome! Worked after I managed to sort out my poor terminal inputs.

This solved my problem after updating to 13.04 on my Lenovo Thinkpad. Hint: to get to the net, I connected via Ethernet cable to my Fritz!box

I have a similar Issue, (Non-working WIFI on a Dell Inspiron 1501 on a new install of Ubuntu) but thought it not proper to piggy back onto another's message thread. So I have started a new thread for my issue here:Dell Inspiron 1501 + Ubuntu 13.04 = WIFI doesn't work. If any of you can go there and help me I'd appreciate it.
    Best Wishes,
    Stephen

Amazing! I have fought so much with trying to get this to work and all I needed to do was this? The wireless is now working great on my Inspiron 1501 with Linux Mint 14. Thank you so much!

I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 with the exact same wireless card as OP. I've tried:
    sudo apt-get remove --purge bcmwl-kernel-source
    sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree
and rebooted, but I still get no wireless signal and no indication that my wireless card is active.

Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated!
