Making Ubuntu 12.04 Work For Me - Help?

Since upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04, I cannot run practically anything that uses 3D acceleration. For example, on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, my Minecraft installation hovered around 40-50 FPS, which is quite playable. Now, I get between ten seconds and five minutes of 40 FPS, then crash to less than one FPS. I find it nearly impossible that hardware is the problem, because the problem was nonexistent on 10.04 and then consistently present on 12.04 less than three days later.

So, on to my hypotheses - I suspect either the window manager or the window effects. However, thanks to the effects slider being inexplicably missing from Ubuntu 12.04, I cannot devise (or find online) a way to bring down my effects settings. As far as the window manager, I can't figure out how to switch from compiz to metacity. I already have installed gnome-panel and am running in a Gnome Classic session, but that also did nothing for my problem.

Well, that's about it. If one of my two guesses was right and someone knows how to fix the problem according to those, I would be grateful. Heck, if I'm completely wrong about those and STILL someone knows how to fix the problem, I'd be even more grateful. But if Ubuntu would get their next release right and make it a bit easier to customize it to my needs, I'd be most grateful. Anyway, please help. I hate being limited this way when I know my system can handle it.

P.S. If this didn't supply enough information to solve the problem, please ask for additional. I really want to solve this, because if I can't, I'll be leaving Ubuntu, and I hate switching distros.

I don't recall ever seeing an effects slider on Ubuntu, and I've been using Ubuntu since 8.04.

Compiz runs in standard Ubuntu. Metacity runs in Ubuntu 2D and Gnome Classic.

As a last resort, try Gnome Classic (No Effects) to see if that makes any difference.

Have you run Additional Drivers to check if anything is there?

In my day, we had outdoors in which to run, play, and socialise. Now we have computers to do those.
