sound delay from xbox 360 using spdif

I don't know if anyone has posted a similar problem that I have and if someone else has had already posted something similar please point me in the right direction.

I have a USB sound card (st lab m-330 I think) that has optical/spdif inputs and outputs. In windows 7, I have configured it so that my xbox audio can pass through to my analog speakers with no lag <albeit in stereo as the card cannot decode dolby 5.1>. I have Ubuntu 12.04 installed on the same machine but after upgrading Alsa to 1.0.25 and configured the spdif input as a recording source it worked but here is the problem.

There is a huge delay that only gets worse as the pc is on. Is there a way to fix this delay problem as sometimes the xbox guide sound has even played a few moments after I have turned off the console.
