    64 bit vs 32 bit ubuntu 12.04

    Hi,

I want to install ubuntu 12.04 in my newly bought lenovo laptop which has the following configuration.

    Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2670QM CPU @ 2.20GHz 4 cores
    Memory: 8 GB
    Nvidia GeForce GT 555 M

Please help me to decide what version (32 or 64 bit) of ubuntu 12.04 I should install on my laptop. The download page on ubuntu website recommends 32 bit. Does it mean that 64 bit has some problems or unstable.

    Thank you for your help.

Re: 64 bit vs 32 bit ubuntu 12.04

Moved to recurring discussions as it has been answered so many times.

Ubuntu was finally going to make 64 bit the recommendation as most computers support it, but found about 25% of users had 32bit systems. So they still recommend 32bit for those old systems.

They assume if you have a new system you know you need 64 bit.
Many threads in forum on reason to use 64bit, a few very special and old apps have not been updated to 64 bit and might be the only special case where 32 bit would be a choice.

While pae will use your 8GB, it is less efficient than 64bit.

Why Ubuntu officially suggests 32bit (25% have 32bit systems)

Go for 64-bit if your box supports it and it sounds like it does. I can see no reason not to use 64-bit at this point. The few problems that existed a few years ago have entirely disappeared. There is 64-bit flash and java, etc. I've been using exclusively 64-bit OS's on my machines for the last almost three years and have had no problems at all.

What about (older) printer, scanner drivers etc? Likely to have any problems?
