Please recommend an mp3 that is very affordable and holds a lot and plugs into USB and works easily with Ubuntu where I can just drop mp3 files onto it and the are in the device.

what space amount are you looking for?
as in how many gigs?
Are know for Linux compatabilityCode:http://www.archos.com/
Ubuntu 18.04
so is sansa too, I swear by my sansa clip
I have a Sansa Clip+. Works great with Ubuntu.
Best bang for your buck.
I use flac (free lossless audio compression) files for my music.
The sound quality is extremely good.
I really like they way it handles radio podcasts, especially the way it shuts down at the end of a podcast after I fall asleep.
Cowon or gtfo!
All of their players work great with linux, they have open source software for their devices and they have some of the best players I've ever used, I'm currently using the Cowon J3.
Sansa Clip+ also works fine for me.
Used it at work in a dusty environment every day for the last couple of years to
listen to podcasts.
Just plugin via usb every couple of nights to recharge and sync via gpodder.
The headphones have good sound but I replaced them with the earhook type
as they're more comfortable to wear.
Another vote for the Sansa Clip+. Inexpensive, good sound quality, expandable memory; plug it in and Ubuntu recognizes it as a removable drive.
You could just use your phone; i've a Huawei that just comes up as a removable drive when you plug it in via USB which you can just drag and drop mp3's to. My super-old Blackberry Pearl 8100 was the same.
Saves having a whole other device to worry about charging, remembering to take with you etc.
Just a suggestion anyway. My Dad asked me what sort of mp3 player he should get, and i suggested the Blackberry Storm he already has. He now Bluetooths it with Bluetooth headphones and his Bluetooth car stereo.
