Disabling NOMODESET is now allowing a fresh re-installation. If it is ok I will continue to use this thread until I have it installed.
FWIW; It is a little surprising to me that this all started from a simple upgrade. I love Ubuntu and have it on 4-5 of the computers on my network including a server and have never had this many problems with one install
Upgrades can become really messy if you use PPAs, to avoid extra downtime and drama, I (and probably everyone else) recommend creating a separate /home and reinstalling Ubuntu when a new distribution upgrade comes out.

I will create a new home and fresh install from here on out. Is there a tutorial or guide to help with that? For a beginner it is too easy to click the box on update manager. There is no option for a fresh install
Quite easy, first off, do you want to keep your current partition and refurbish it as home (Might be risky)? Or do you wish to start clean and move only certain files off your home folder?

Fortunately it is on a box that doesn't have any real important files.
I may have been a little optimistic about my install. 2 hours later I have a desktop and spinning cd curser but I don't think the OS is installed. Any help? It looks like the OS is on the HD but for some bizzare reason it won't boot from the drive. Bios settings look ok.

Hi, did you remove the cd from the drive?
In your bios is the HD set to boot first?
Describe what happens when you try to boot and what you see.
Thanks
CD is out. I'm actually updating from a USB. I started another thread in Installation but if I can still get help here I will. I found a thread with a similar proplem so I tried a fix. Hope it helps.
USB upgrade won't boot
I used the upgrade box in update manager to go from 11.10 to 12.04. I had too many problems so I tried to do a clean install from a USB drive. I can't get the computer to boot without the drive in place. I saw other people had similar problems but not close enough for me to figure out.
