A GUI to edit unity launchers?

Are there plans this cycle or a future cycle of a GUI to edit unity launchers?

In gnome 2.x (and now MATE) you could use say alacarte to edit menu items easily to add you own additional commands to the launchers.

    Unity has nothing like it.

    Any plans for one?

In my eyes it's one of the most annoying drawbacks of Unity at the moment.

Interesting will take a look thanks, I still think it's a job for a first party app rather than a third party one, but then again with Ubuntu's target audience mainly the novice user i guess this would be classed as power use functionality editing launchers?

You can still use alacarte to add/edit menu entries and then from dash drag it to the unity launcher.

The ule seems to have gotten going again to some extent after many months of inactivity

If trying you'd 'run' unity-launcher-editor/ule (run, not open in terminal

It hasn't been set up to use the new 'Desktop Actions' which is slated to replace the old "X-Ayatana-Desktop-Shortcuts" so it won't properly edit any existing .desktop that uses 'Actions'

Atm .desktops using X-Ayatana-Desktop-Shortcuts will still work, whether that continues thru 12.10 dev I don't know, probably shouldn't

There's an annoying bug with alacarte though: to keep an icon from appearing in the dash, you can't just uncheck it, you have to remove it completely. Another problem is that it pulls tons of dependencies, including gnome-panel. I have no clue why.

Let's hope they integrate a better tool with Ubuntu Control Panel this cycle.

Yes we do need a proper tool to do it and not a third party one.

You can try out this tool:

    http://iloveubuntu.net/arronax-002-r...-ppa-available

And yes i agree when GNOME developers decided GUI editor for launchers is not needed anymore they were wrong.

It's still needed and now it's just not there anymore!
