you need someone who knows more about all the possible reasons; surely there must be someone outthere who could crack it for you..... whoever you may be....

reinstall as you say is a sledgehammer to crack a nut

I'm using Debian sid with Debian multimedia repo. My audio setup uses no pulseaudio and no software mixing.
For me, the file plays correctly in Audacious (3.3.x, built from source), ffplay and mplayer

The file does not play correctly in gstreamer apps (rbox, totem, gst123) or vlc.

I'll do more testing later when it stops thundering here.

Well due to a couple of other glitches and things I took the plunge and done a complete reinstall. Still the same problem. Then installed restricted set and VLC through the link Shantiq kindly posted and... still not working.

Guess I will have to look and doing something else with the files on the windows side before taking the Ubuntu leap full time.

Thanks for all the tips guys. Really not sure what else can be tried?

I'm baffled why VLC can't play it while other ffmpeg-based players can. :\
    Code:
    $ cvlc -v ~/Downloads/05\ Messenger\ Birds.m4a
VLC media player 2.0.1 Twoflower (revision 2.0.1-0-gf432547)

Don't be. You'd think that every media player treats input files the same, but that's just not the case.

So, file a bug against vlc and post the bug # here. I'll add a verification to the bug, to demonstrate that it's not just you.

    Hi
VLC won't play "05 Messenger Birds.m4a" for me...
but it will play OK with VLC when decompressed to wav
    Code:
    ffmpeg -i "05 Messenger Birds.m4a" -c:a pcm_s24le Messenger_Birds.wav
    Then
    Code:
    cvlc Messenger_Birds.wav
Maybe VLC is happy with 24/96 wav files, but not if they are flac or alac.
Could be a bug in VLC.

Well, gstreamer-ffmpeg exhibits the same behavior as VLC, so I think it goes deeper. I even tried gstreamer 1.0 from debian experimental

    Re: 24/96 Files Play Sllooowwllly

i bet you it will [the problem therefore and it is not a problem if that is right would be something in the Windows encoding; something specific there that does not ALWAYS translate well to Linux]
    Hi Shantiq

I shall try again later when I am near the computer with the actual files but I have already tried converting them and it didn't help. Can't remember exact text but received error about intitializing codec for .m4as. I also played around with them in windows but none would subsequently play in Ubuntu.

ok failed to see ffmpeg turned them into 16-bit so not an option that way
