Two-finger scroll with ALPS on 12.04?

I have an old Dell Vostro 1400 which has the ALPS trackpad, and edge-scrolling is driving me nuts.

Before I decide to replace it, I looked around and found some web pages discussing various options for getting the ALPS trackpad to do two-finger scrolling.

So my questions are:

1 Is that possible? How can a trackpad designed for single-point input be made to handle multiple points?

2. Is there a package for this known to work with 12.04?
