How to install on 1Gbyte solid state drive

    Hi All

Any recommendations for what (and how!) to install on a very small solid-state drive? I can boot 10.04 desktop from a USB stick, and would like to install the base system without games, graphics, web browser, office, sound, video etc. I can't see anywhere to say which software I want: seems to be all-or-nothing.

Is this possible or do I need a different distribution?

    Thanks for any advice.

    Kind regards,
    Jonathan.

    Try using the minimal cd.

Perhaps I should just get a bigger SSD! Just I had this one handy sitting here.

    Thanks,
    Jonathan.

Huh. I wasn't aware they made ssd that small. Do you mean the kind that you plug into usb?

With 1 GB you would probably be lucky to be able to put a bootable live/install iso, without any persistent data. It helps to have at least 2 GB for that which which I think ends up ~1.7 GB formatted if you want any persistent data. That uses FAT or FAT32 file system.

Although, back in the days I used to run a complete Slackware system including X booting zipslack from LS120 Super Disk (120 MB floppy).

People mention that Peanut Linux can be small, but I have never tried it.

I still like slitaz for that, give it a whirl, fast and has a solid package manager, plus it is teeny tiny. Install with universal usb installer from http://www.pendrivelinux.com/univers...easy-as-1-2-3/ if you have access to a windows system.
