Thread: Ubuntu 12.04 boots for more then 60s.

    Unhappy Ubuntu 12.04 boots for more then 60s.

    My Ubuntu (version 12.04 with latest updates), installed with Wubi alongside Windows 7, boots abnormally slow. I timed it both with bootchart (unfortunately not possible to post in attachment because of the resulting poor quality) and a stopwatch and it always needed more then 60/70 seconds from when I chose Ubuntu in GRUB to when the login menu appeared. I had previous installs of Ubuntu with Wubi on other machines but it never took so long for them to boot as with this install. I also booted several times to see if this was a one-time issue, but it always needed more then a minute. Once it has booted and I logged in it runs just fine!

    My specs:
    Computer: HP Pavilion g7 Laptop, Core i5
    Ubuntu: 12.04, 64 bit version

    So my question is: What can I do to fix this? Is it a common issue nowadays with Wubi and should I switch to real partitioning? Or are there some scripts/adjustments I could use/make to make to make it faster?

    You should take a look at the kernel messages. Run this command in a terminal and attach the output:

    There is a 30 seconds delay during boot. Might be related to udev and a buggy initialization of the realtek network module.

    So you might want to try this:

    echo "blacklist r8169" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-ethernet.conf
    Code:
    gksudo gedit /etc/rc.local
    Add "modprobe r8169" before the last line (exit 0) and reboot.

    If this does not change anything, try to blacklist the wireless module instead.

    The most important finding is not the rather expected variation in boot times for such seemingly similar distributions, it's the great lack of major time boost with SSD compared to older hardware and much slower disks....

    To sum it up, Mint and Ubuntu will get you there in 10 seconds or less, Kubuntu will manage in about 22 seconds. Overall, all three results are fairly satisfactory for modern standards.

    10s sounds GREAT, but unfortunately my Ubuntu ,,get's me there'' in 70s... My problem likely is not distribution specific, it has to do with f.e. (as someone mentioned in this thread) the wireless module causing 30s extra or something similar.

    So guys, thanks for all of your suggestions, but sadly none of them has worked. Any other ideas related to this? It still is a problem, the booting time hasn't improved
