xubuntu install

i burned the 12.04 xubuntu disc and can get it to load on my laptop, click try and it loads fine. i want to install the system on my dell gx240 but it dead ends at the graphical. i can get a command line, cntl-alt-f1, and when i type startx it says x is already running. i tried sudo rm /tmp/.X0-lock, with no result. i also tried to update apt-get and upgrade but it doesn't seem to find 12.04. i have the last version of xubuntu installed.

If the desktop 12.04 won't work, try the ALT CD, which avoids the gui and uses ncurses interface for installation. (Fresh install!)
