    Gnome Summer Women's Outreach Program

I don't code, but for women that do, Gnome is having it's own summer of code for three female students to receive $3000 stipends to work on a Gnome-related project for two months this summer.

The details are on the Gnome website.

It would be wonderful if an Ubuntu women could be one of the participants!

This actually looked *really* exciting. I'll have to think about it some more.

I emailed them yesterday on their basic programming knowledge requirement (I only know basic Java...I'm not sure that's enough ). I'll post them here when they reply.

I would, but i only write vague bits of c++ and package things - which hardly seems like proper coding.

Oh yeah, and i dont use gnome, which would make it a bit silly.

Gnome is mostly programmed in C. But I think that some phython knowledge could come handy as well.

Re: Gnome Summer Women's Outreach Program

All right, finally got a reply from WSOP:

Most of the available projects require fluency in C, C++, C# or
    Python
. If you think you could tackle a 2 month project in one of
these languages, then by all means apply! However, if you feel this is
too big a leap from Java, there are plenty of other ways to get
    involved in GNOME.

We plan on running a general (unpaid) mentoring program for people who
would like to get involved in GNOME development, but aren't sure where
to start, or who don't yet have the relevant coding skills
    . We're
still in the early stages of organising this, so I'm afraid we can't
set you up with a mentor as part of that just yet, however I'd be
happy to email you once the program is established. In the mean time,
I'd recommend you join the GNOME Women project, which is dedicated to
encouraging women to contribute to GNOME. You can subscribe to the
    project mailing list by visiting
    http://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gnome-women-list. The GNOME
Women wiki page (http://live.gnome.org/GnomeWomen) has a great list of
suggestions for getting involved in GNOME.
I don't think I'll be fluent in Python by the end of the month, but the unpaid mentoring program sounds like a great opportunity for those who are interested.

BTW, the WSOP application form is now available:

Re: Gnome Summer Women's Outreach Program

For Google's Summer of Code program (GSoC), about 180 candidates applied to have their proposals sponsored. All of the candidates were men. Chris Ball has informed me that the same order of magnitude of women have applied thus far for WSOP, and there's still another week left to accept applications. A lot of the applicants are quite qualified (a large number of CS PhDs applied, for instance) and the general quality of the applications and applicants has been astoundingly good.

If you have applied for the WSOP (doesn't matter if you weren't accepted in the end), read the link above and consider helping.
