Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

    Hello Aggienator again,
I am glad it was an easy fix, those are the best kind of fixes. XD I had the same issue back in hardy and it drove me nuts. I have noticed with Lucid that if I enable the networking / wireless networking via the GUI it will turn on the wireless card (and the blue led on my laptop) most of the times. I'm not too sure why the laptop won't always turn on the wireless during boot up specially when it was on last time it booted.

    Good luck,
    Sugi

Thanks Sugi, could you tell me where in the GUI it is with 10.04? I'm using the studio version of Ubuntu and it doesn't seem to have network manager as an available panel application.

    Cheeers Aggie

    Hello Aggienator,
Enable Networking and/or Wireless if it's not already enable. This should enable your wireless card and turn on the led in the laptop.

P.S.: Sorry for the late reply, I was trying to find a good screen shot online.

    Hi Sugi,

I don't seem to have most of these icons in my notification area (just the date/time and the Wastebasket). I might install a different version of ubuntu and see if it works with that.

    Cheers Aggie

    Hello Aggienator,
Can you try to reinstall the network manager for your ubuntu studio again please.

    Do this with the terminal:
    sudo apt-get install network-manager network-manager-gnome
    or
Within the cd of your ubuntu studio:
    /media/cdrom0/pool/main/n/network-manager-applet

For safe keeping, reinstall the Broadcom drivers from the "Hardware Drivers" again.

Back to your post from before,

Thanks for all your efforts, have installed Network Manager, but it doesn't appear in the menu or as an available applet to put on the panel. I tried typing network_manager as a command in terminal, but that didn't work! Am now really puzzled!

The little orange light that shows wireless networking has come on! All I have to do now is find how to enter the passphrase etc!

    All Connected

    Sugi, You are a star!

After a few minutes the Network Connections appeared in the Preferences menu. Installing Network manager was what was needed!

Now to check out which type of encryption my router and ubuntu have in common.

    Cheers Aggie

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

On an Acer Aspire 3630, I made a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04, used Hardware Drivers aka /usr/bin/jockey-gtk to get the driver for my wireless card and rebooted.

Now when I right-click NetworkManager, it shows Activate Wireless greyed out, and I can't select it.

jockey-gtk seems to think that the driver is installed correctly.

    /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf has:
    # replaced by b43 and ssb.
    blacklist bcm43xx

Any idea what might be wrong?
