    GREAT INSTRUCTIONS;
Being user I needed help from our opensourceHouston.org lug group. "Chuck" read your tutorial and did the work. My HP/Comp nx6110 came up ready to go and on restart it connected. It has worked in Houston and here on Lake Livingston. Nice work sir.

Smile Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

Double thanks! I successfully followed the directions for establishing wireless Internet for Dapper which I had just installed from a disk in a "how-to book." Realizing there was a newer version and lots of security patches, etc. for Dapper I decided to download and install Edgy. I then had to repeat the same process to get the Broadcom 4318 wireless card to work again, except this time I also had to use the command:

    sudo apt-get install ndiswrapper-utils-1.8 ndiswrapper-utils-1.1 ndiswrapper-utils ndiswrapper-common

and insert the installation disk I had created to install Edgy. Wonders of wonders I now have wireless Internet access again!

As an additional benefit, I now know something (very little of course) about terminal and some other aspects of this operating system which is totally new to me, a somewhat technically challenged person!

    Thanks again!

    G

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

Brandon and compwiz, I appreciate all your help and work on this issue... I am still not able to get the dang wireless card to even show up on the networking box.... it did recognize the card before, just not activate it, now it seems like it it doesn't even see the card...
I tried the ndiswrapper -m and got the following
    ben@ben-laptop:~$ ndiswrapper -m
Adding "alias wlan0 ndiswrapper" to /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper
sh: cannot create /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper: Permission denied
do I need to run that as a sudo?

I dont get any output from the dmesg | grep ndis

    Thanks

    ~Ben

Ben, yes, run "ndiswrapper -m" as sudo. See what "dmesg | grep ndis" gives you after that.

EDIT: Just noticed you're a fellow North Carolinian! I'm near Shelby/Gastonia area at Gardner-Webb. Glad to see you here!

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

I tried running that as sudo, and it seems to have done its thing, though I am still not getting anything from the dmesg | grep ndis.......

still no wireless card in networking, though it does show up in device manager...

I wonder if i should try a fresh reinstall.... I haven't done anything to try to get this card running other than this howto, but i am beginning to wonder if i managed to fudge something up somewhere....

Nice to meet see that there is another north carolinian crazy (smart) enough to throw a brick through *******. Now if I can just get this wireless card workin, maybe I will be able to figure out how it can go from the warmest day on record, to 3in of snow overnight...

Can you give the output of these commands run in a terminal?

    Code:
    sudo iwlist scan
    iwconfig
    ifconfig
    dmesg | grep ndis
    ndiswrapper -l
    cat /etc/network/interfaces
    lspci | grep Broadcom
    sudo modprobe ndiswrapper

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

I'm having a very similar problem setting up this card on my Gateway MX6440. After I ran the script for the first time on a brand new 6.10 Edgy install (only thing I did was download and install the 2.6.19.1 Kernel from the Kernel link on the first page) , the card was no longer in System->Administration->Networking. My system says that the driver is installed, but it doesn't show up there.

After I installed Network Manager If I try to click on the icon that should be for my wireless connection it gives me the error message of "SIOCGIFFLAGS error: No such device".

    nibs@nibs-laptop:~$ sudo iwlist scan

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

I just noticed on the first page, that there are tarballs linked at the bottom that appear to be for 64 bit computers, should I be using those as opposed to the link to download the tarball earlier in the howto? I am running a 64 bit turion....

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

Also, has anyone who has the broadcom chipset (or any other linux unfriendly hardware) written to the manufacturer to complain? I mean I bought this HP because I was told that HP is a linux friendly computer manufacturer, so why are they putting this windbloze proprietary poop in their product?
