HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

hey, i got one sugestion

change the destination of the log file to the current folder.

i use a commandline interface and was wondering for hours why it didnt install, until i noticed that it tried to write the log in ~/Desktop , witch dosnt exist.


or better even, check if there is a folder called ~/Desktop
if there is then post it there, if not in the current directory variable you already have

I have to thank you for posting this step by step with download, it works for me on Dapper (6.06) as well! You just have to be sure to update ndiswrapper first. Otherwise you're just playing around and won't get anywhere. It took me two tries to get these steps to work. One time through, I hadn't updated my version of ndiswrapper for Dapper and was sitting here bound and determined to get it to work. I owe my success to you!

First of all, this script worked great. I took a little tinkering for me, but I got it after reading through this thread.

I am using Kubuntu dapper AMD64 and Broadcom 4318 wireless card

A couple point of interest though:
1. Is there anyone that is currently working on getting Knetworkmanager to work in Kubuntu

I have tried many different things, and I have got Knetwormanager to show up in the system tray, but when I try to connect to a wireless connection it just keeps trying and then eventually says it couldn't connect.

I read through the entire thread (took little bit ) and only saw that other people were having the same problem, but nobody has seemed to fix it or has been working on it.

BTW, at the time I removed all connections managers but the one, also commented out all lines but the "lo" ones in the interfaces file.

I don't think this is essential by any means, but it would be nice to have a little applet to use rather than the clunky icon of wlassistant.

2. I think I read somewhere in the post about getting the wireless connection to appear on boot. With wlassistant, you have to manually connect everytime. Is there a way to do this with my setup.

Any help with this is greatly appreciated.

I've a Compaq Presario M2020US.

02:06.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 03)

Installed Ubunto 6.10, everything worked out of the box except for the wireless connection.

My ethernet port is fried so I can only use wireless connection.

I set up my lappy's HD to have 4 partitions - NTFS, FAT32, ext3 and swap.

I used my Windows internet connection to get your gzipped script and to copy the instructions to the FAT32 partition.

Then I logged into Ubuntu and used the instructions to get the wireless adapter turned on (blue light special).

I followed the rest of the instructions to go to System|Administration|Networking and to enable the Wireless Connection by going into the properties and typing in my router's SSID and password.

Rebooted, back into Ubuntu, left-clicked the Network icon up by the clock, and selected the new eth1 option that wasn't there before the fix.

ok i downloaded the 2.6.18.5 kernel and then ran the script

it says it completed successfully however there is no wireless listed any where in networking, all it shows is my modem and my ethernet

Oh! I know what the problem is

easy fix: just gotta compile some stuff...don't worry, not hard:

• download --> ndiswrapper-1.33.tar.gz
• extract using GUI or terminal
• open terminal
• navigate to directory in terminal
• type make
• type sudo make install
• reboot
• use the internet
