Guys, Thanks for a really helpful thread!!
There does seem to be something strange about the 64 bit Edgy install script or driver or something. Thats about as specific as I can be as I'm new to Linux other than some playing around.
Steps I've taken so far:
Install clean Edgy AMD 64bit Desktop.
Add Universe repository
Download 64bit script file for edgy.
Follow directions EXACTLY (Copy and Paste)
Light comes on and zero connectivity. ndiswrapper -l shows device and driver installed. Had to be me, I'm new at this
So I did all of the above again, including the troubleshooting steps.
Light comes on zero connectivity.
Both times I tried the AP in many different configs (Security on/off open/shared Wep Etc. No connectivity.
Frustration Factor = HUGE
Guess I'm going to be stuck on Vista forever...
OK, One more try. Install 32bit i386 Edgy Desktop, clean install.
Add universe repository.
Download 32 bit edgy script file.
Follow directions EXACTLY.
Reboot
Now I can see the wireless networks around me.
Install gnome network manager and whatever else it needed (dependencies?)
Reboot
Connect to other wireless network with wpa+2 personal.
Connected!!! Working !!! Encryption!!!
Dunno whats up with the 64bit but I can live with 32 and functional.
Many many thanks to you guys for taking the time and making the effort to help out those of us that are new to this.
For what it is worth this is a HP/Compaq SE L2000 (Lance Armstrong) notebook with the Broadcom 54g built in.
Tada! the new script is up, have at it
Nice, though it no longer works for me in Edgy. Drats!
Also you should maybe change the script to include the *.debs already, like the former did. Right now you either need a wired connection or (like myself) download ndiswrapper-common and ndiswrapper-utils1.8 and copy it on your laptop using a USB-stick or whatever.
Edit: I'm running an HP nx6110, 32-bit.

I'm trying out your new script, but I want to make sure I do things right the first time. You say:
I'm running kubuntu on an AMD64 system, and my Edgy download only came with the linux-image-2.6.17-10-generic. Even after enabling all the repositories (including multiverse), I can't seem to find the "2.6.17-7" kernel anywhere for download. Where do I go for this?If you are using 64bit Edgy Eft with this, MAKE SURE that you select the 2.6.17-7-generic kernel in GRUB when you boot.
Thanks for your help... and for simplifying the instructions!
no still needs ndiswrapper... i have a clear howto here: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=285809
