Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

I used this method to run my wi-fi card on my Compaq Presario v5000. When I start my computer, it says its already connected to the wireless network in my house. However, it really isn't, as I can't do anything that requires internet connectivity. But when i right click on the network manager in the upper right hand corner, disable the network, then click on the wireless button on my laptop, wait a few seconds, enable networking, then click the wireless button, it will connect without a problem. is there any way i can fix this so it will just connect without having to go through all this crap? thanks!

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

Ubuntu newbie trying to get an Acer Aspire L100 (integrated Broadcom 4318 adapter) working with Feisty. I've installed ndiswrapper, acer_acpi, the patch described above and have got it to the point where Linux recognizes the card enough that I can scan and display my wireless network and the router also lists my PC's MAC Address as one that is "connected'.

    % iwlist eth1 scan
    eth1 Scan completed :
    <neighbor's networks deleted>
    Cell 03 - Address: 00:13:10:EE:AF:A6
    ESSID:"test"
    Protocol:IEEE 802.11g
    Mode:Managed
    Frequency:2.462 GHz (Channel 11)
    Quality:48/100 Signal level:-65 dBm Noise level:-96 dBm
    Encryption keyff
    Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s; 9 Mb/s
    11 Mb/s; 12 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s; 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s
    48 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s
    Extra:bcn_int=100
    Extra:atim=0

However, I can't get an ip address via DHCP or pass any traffic. I have temporarily disabled encryption, MAC filtering, etc. on my router without effect. Any ideas what to try next?

Try a different network manager, perhaps. See wicd in my sig or wifi-radar in the package manager.

spankme, I can't help you with Acer stuff, sorry

Hmm ... a worthy suggestion, however no love with wicd (except that now my wired connection seems to be broken until I shut it down).

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

You can uninstall it and try something else - it shouldn't of broken anything though :S

you may want to make sure that the acer stuff is configured correctly, as wicd should work fine with ndiswrapper.

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

@Apex-jb: Well, looks like everything worked, but the computer can't find any networks... My suggestion would be to check and make sure that there are networks actually in range (ie sit next to the wireless access point). This problem has occured before, so I'm guessing that it isn't your fault that it can't find any networks The other idea would be to push the wireless button on your computer so that it lights up (if you have a button)

Sometimes it will just start working out of its own free will.

    And welcome to Ubuntu!

So it actually did work? Hmm... I just reformated again to try and start over. Guess Ill do it again and see what happens. My access point is just downstairs from me and their are ample access points all around here. So I know there is a good signal where Im at. And my laptop does not have an external button.
