    1. Does anyone know how to edit the wireless profiles for a network? Network Manager only asks for credentials the first time you connect to a new network. After that, you're stuck with what you got.

    2. Also, does anyone know how the edit the priority of the wireless networks? NM also only takes the order you choose a network the first time as its priority. It'll connect in that order every time. This is annoying.

    3. Does anyone know how to get WPA support if you turn off roaming mode and use regular old network settings instead of NM?

this is a repost from back on page 45. It should point you in the right direction:

    Randall, you fixed it!

this is what I was missing the whole time! I really didn't think it would work, since I have tried so many other fixes, but this is it!

When you can connect with out any encription, do this:

    system > administration > networking

put your key in there. Let ubuntu time out with the new settings.

edit your interface file like Randall suggests:

    iface wlan0 inet dhcp
    wireless-essid Starfleet
    wireless-key open XXXXXXXXXX

the key is to add the word 'open" before your key. I don't know why the network manager doesn't have this in there already, but it doesn't. and I don't know why wifi-radar doesn't add it either (I didn't test this, I only know it doesn't work) but I suspect that, as a Windows user, I am used to haveing the program do what i say. Perhaps there is a way to run wifi-radar as sudo that i don't know about or understand. But that is the fix! put open in there and it works!

I am going to reset all of my devices to use open, bring the network back up, and post to you all my successes (I KNOW it will work, i can feel it!).

PS: there is still no icon in network manager in the upper right that let me know the wireless is connected, but who cares if ti works, right?

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

I'm running into a problem with ndiswrapper. I have a dv5000 laptop and my only internet connection is through my wireless. I'm dual booting into XP to go online to get advice and I think I almost have it. I tried your script on feisty fawn, but it doesn't work. I don't have ndiswrapper and I think that is the problem. Here's the part of the log that makes me think so.

    Code:

If I could get ndiswrapper installed before running the script, would that work? Also if so, where could I find it?

Just in case it may be something else, here is the whole log.

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

Actually, I just got it working and am posting this from within ubuntu. What I did was I went to the ubuntu package collection online(here) and manually downloaded ndiswrapper-common and ndiswrapper-utils-1.9 (listed under miscellaneous.) After that, I installed them and then installed the drivers from your package and after a restart, boom, it worked. Thanks, after a two days of searching, I'm finally able to stay in ubuntu without having to go to windows for the internet.

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

Hey All! I wanted to say thanks for all the collective work and knowledge in this thread (hell, in the whole Ubuntu community).

I have a Compaq 2414nr (v2000) laptop with this wireless card in it, and I was unsatisfied with the native driver's speed as I often pull over files from my tower and 54mbps is so much better than 11.

After 3 fresh installs of Feisty, I managed to get this to work using: a) the install script in the first post, and b) the instructions on how to compile my own updated ndiswrapper

I currently have a WPA-enabled wireless network at home, and I didn't want to turn off my security to use ndiswrapper, and this fixed that problem.

Curiously, and as a note to compwiz18, wicd wouldn't connect to my network. I had to switch back to network-manager to get it to work. My network has the ESSID broadcast off and is running WPA-AES by the way.

I've been a fan of linux for a very long time, using various distro's off and on, but never really caring for any of them. Ubuntu really impressed me right away with it's live/install DVD option, and I think I may actually take the time to learn linux now. I certainly don't want Vista.

    Again, thanks for the help.

I have the exact same laptop as you and this worked for me up until a couple weeks ago. Some distro updates broke it. I can't connect to my network using WPA anymore. What version of ndiswrapper are you using? I am using 1.9 from feisty. Did you compile a different version per the link you said you used?

the Feisty ndiswrapper doesn't work with WPA for some reason, you will have to compile your own I think. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...er/Ndiswrapper

I compiled version 1.46 of ndiswrapper. The page linked in my above post and in the one from compwiz18 is what you need to follow. All is working well now (but don't turn off the card using any physical off switch as the drivers will not re-initialize afterwards).

Yes, this is true. It's not hard, just follow the directions linked here, rsvirani.
