Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

In the most recent posts, there's talk about needing to compile the most recent version of ndiswrapper to get wireless to work on WPA-enabled networks. Is that still the case? If so, over what sort of timeframe can we expect the newest ndiswrapper version to appear in the ubuntu repositories. I have this thing where I'm "lazy" and I don't want to have to maintain my system manually (i.e. recompiling packages whenever I upgrade my kernel).
Laptop: AMD64 Turion, 80GB HD, 512 MB RAM, bcm4318 wireless. Desktop: 3.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, Zotac GeForce 9600GT Pro

The newest version will probably appear in whatever is after Feisty... only security upgrades are offered in the repos.

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

I'd just like to say thanks for posting this. This got my wireless internet working!

As the author mentioned, it is only connected on 802.11b. Is it possible to connect with 802.11g? as it is currently a bit slow.

I tried browsing through the many pages of this thread without much luck, and the search function on this forum does not really help searching through a single long thread.

    Much thanks.

You can use the second method on the first post, it will disable anything you have done before, and it will use wireless G at full speed.

I tried the Feisty script, but that did not work. I then tried the general method, and that did work. I am not sure if I had to reboot several times.

Make sure Network Manager is installed. Without Network Manager being installed, Ubuntu's Networking Adminstration thingie will not allow you to roam. All roaming means is that you are able to switch from one wireless network to another.

I still have a problem with connecting to my own WPA2 network. I am right now connected to my neighbor's unencrypted network.
I'm trying to get WPA to work. You say that after installing ndiswrapper from source the Feisty script doesn't work, but may I ask what is the "general method" that you refer to here? Is that covered in this HOWTO, or is it somewhere else? Thanks a bunch, eh!

Run the script before you compile ndiswrapper from source

Also, the general method is the one that is outlined on the first page for all three distributions of Ubuntu. (at least I think that is what s/he means)
