Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

Worked for me, but please note:

First off, the light doesn't stay lit like it does for windows... it works (Like I think it it suppose to, maybe bill couldn't figure it out) only when it is up/downloading. Ingenious.

Network must me open or unsecured... at first.

Do not even attempt this script or howto, or any howto, if you are using a router with DD-WRT (or any other linux) firmware!

After days and days and days.... I decided to revert my router back to the oem firmware just to see if that was what was causing a 29 year old man to cry like a little baby. And poof, (enter magic ferry dust and a tear) it worked!!

I did some tickering and found that no matter what I did, If the router had VxWare or DD-Wrt linux firmwares, It would only connect in windows.

    Just so you know:

    Computer:

    Dell B130 Inspiron
    512mb RAM
    15.4 Widescreen
BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02)

    Ubuntu:
    6.10 (downloaded today 02/14/07)
    Fresh install Dual w/ WinXP
Did not Update (Yet, Scared to try)
Unpluged the wired @ reboot after script

    Me:
    Cigarette in mouth
Beer, still hidden outside, wife will catch me.
    Full ashtray
    And a Moutain Dew

Thank you for the help Compwiz18!! (my wife thanks you too, now I have to get back to house work.)

One last thing, I know off subject

UPDATE: partition that I was trying was not fat32.. it was CPM ... a Dell thing, but still fat32... just erased partition (lost data) and formated as fat32.
fixed: I still can't seem to access my fat32 partition that I made to share btwn xp and ubuntu?

Hey I think I can help with your fat32 shared partition problem. Can I have your output of sudo vol_id -u /dev/hda4 if your shared drive is /dev/hda4. If you don't know what it is, run sudo fdisk -l and find what it says under DEVICE BOOT next to the fat32. Also post your fstab file. (sudo gedit /etc/fstab)

Mine stays on all the time, but you aren't the first person who has the light only on when transmitting data.

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

I've gone through the process a few times and always have the same result. I see the wifi card in the System --> Admin -->Networking. I can enable it but it does not pull an IP from the router. In the Networking Tools I see an entry for a v6 IP address but my router is using v4. I checked my router settings and everything seems fine in there, no MAC filtering or anything. As requested, here is my log file...

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

Hey compwiz, I just wanted to thank you again for your help, my 4318 card works flawlessly in my amd64... the light stays on full time when the card is on, and goes off when i push the wifi button for what it's worth...
A little off topic but relavent since I think it may be an issue with the fix here:
I was hoping I could pick your brains a little for some help with fglrx, as I am having issues I think since I used the 2.6.19.2 kernel, and have not got fglrx to load successfully yet... even glxgears logs down horribly... anyhow, I noticed you had fglrx on your kernel page for the 19.1 kernel, and was wondering if I should redo the howto here with the 19.1 kernel, or if the 19.1 fglrx would work with the 19.2 kernel... it seems whatever fglrx howto i've used seems to load the driver into the 17.11 kernel modules, and the 19.2 kernel isn't finding them.

    Thanks~Ben

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

    Superteece,
I was having problems with both the Admin/networkin set up, as well as network manager, but wifi radar works flawlessly for me, the signal meter even works somewhat, and it finds signals that neither of the other ones would locate. Both of the others could find the strong signals, but neither would give me an ip either, but wifi radar hasn't failed me yet.... Good Luck

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

I am giving up, I did it with Ubuntu 6.04-6.10 and now 7.04 Feisty Fawn and noting works.
The time I spent in trying to make bcm4318 working could buy me a new Lap Top.
I am going to install a 802.11g Wireless Cardbus Adapter

Re: HOWTO: Broadcom 4318 Wireless Cards

I tried this but now Wireless is not even an option under Sys->admin->networking tools I am running Ubuntu 6.10, and am fully updated. Internet works via LAN cable but I want the broadcom 4318 (integrated) to work too. I have a Compaq Presario V2565us (laptop with AMD64-Turion 32).

    I installed the 32 bit/x86 version.

    Help?
