It finally helped when I installed pulseaudio, although I cannot say I understand why exactly.

    Dear shaktiman,
I should have reported a bit earlier - the problem is solved. I still don't know what was the reason, I just used pre-installed OS (Ubuntu 12.04). About a week ago I simply reinstalled the system from a memory stick (the very same Ubuntu 12.04) and everything works well.

    Re: No audio lubuntu 12.04

Installed all four - pavucontrol, pulseaudio, pulseaudio-utils and libgtk-3-0
VLC, rhythmbox, audacity all work fine now.
    Thank you

    Re: No audio lubuntu 12.04

I realize this is an old thread, but I was just troubleshooting the same problem with my system and found a different option to work for me, so I thought I'd log it here. In pavucontrol, select the Configuration tab and try different profiles to see if one of them works. In my case, it was set to Audio Stereo Duplex and changing it to Audio Stereo Output made all the difference. I'm too ignorant to guess at why that might be, but it's worth trying if you have a similar problem.

Just wanted to say thanks. pavucontrol and pulseaudio made my Toshiba Satellite 1905-S277 (super old laptop) audio work.

Something to add... for SKYPE users.
This cost me a stray on Mint 15 and a reinstall by the way...

So leave the default sound mixer (which sucks, old colour and cursor) and launch SKYPE (installed from repo).
Get to SKYPE sound options and discover a long list of cards/options. Select your fafourite... AND MAKE SURE THE 3 ITEMS HAVE THE SAME SELECT !

Until I tried that I was desperate... now USB headset works better than it ever has.

    Hope this helps.

    Also have this issue.
Installed pavucontrol, pulseaudio, pulseaudio-utils and libgtk-3-0 and messed with all of the settings, nothing.
Have an HP desktop, Lubuntu latest version.
    What else can I try?
