Have sent off for the 12.04 cd as it would take too long to download on a dongle.
What I would like to do is put the new o/s alongside 11.10. temporarily.
Is this possible...?.

Yes. When you're installing the second OS just choose "Install Alongside Ubuntu 11.10". If you don't have that option you'll have to make the partitions manually (but it's unlikely that it wont work).
As for it being temporary, you'll have to format the partition 12.04 is on when you want to remove it; you may also need to fix the grub bootloader (not sure). If you have to fix grub there's a tool for that which you can download and run from the LiveCD (I forget the name however). I think it's called FixBoot or GrubRepair, something like that.
Many thanks Zukaro for your reply.
Will give it a try when the disk arrives in next day or two.

Disk arrived and installed.
It worked a treat.
Many thanks,
