Fresh install of 12.04, running the post-release updates version of the NVidia drivers.

As with others on this thread, if I logout prior to shutdown / restart, everything works as expected.
I could shutdow from the login screen when I was running an upgraded version of 12.04.
Since I did a clean install (because I hosed my system during one of the attempts to solve the problem) I can no longer shut down from the login screen.

    The command

    Code:
    sudo halt-p
Seems to work most of the time.
Does anyone know if there is a version of this command to reboot?
    Code:
     sudo reboot
    hangs as well
    Thank you,

    Hi,

I'm having the same problems with a Dell 1720 Inspiron.
Clean install - all updates - restored my 10.10 /home-directory.

After hitting the shut down issue, I found the threat here in the forum.
Then I started the system with previos Linux (kernel 3.2.0 - 23 and no nvida driver installed.
And guess what - the systems shuts down perfectly.

Maybe this helps to drill down to the root cause.

I also could reproduce the log-off-workarround. I could shut down my Dell properly when logged out.

Same problem here. I've 2 systems with ubuntu 12.04. An Acer Aspire Laptop and a clone Pc Intel i7. Shutdowns problems in both systems. With Debian Testing, there is no problem when turn off the machine. Ubuntu 12.04 and Debian Testing have Kernel 3.2.x and Nvidia Propietary Drivers. It's a Ubuntu problem. Any suggestions welcome...

Hey, could you please tell me how to boot with an older kernel? And run without the Nvidia drivers?
I thought they were needed for unity.

    I'd REALLY appreciate the tips!
    Thank you,

Select the old kernel from the grub menu. Otherwise it might be a good idea just to purge the nvidia drivers and leave it with the default drivers.

I don't see a Grub menu on boot - I have a blank screen for a while then goes right to the login screen.

Same issue here. ATI Radeon 6800-series. Clean install of Ubuntu 12.04, was working fine up until the updates I installed three days ago, now it hangs on the first dot on the Ubuntu-logo while shutting down.

I think you have to hold down shift to get it to appear.

I am wondering if this is due to the way the default behavior of halt has been changed.

If sudo halt -p works fine. Reboot should work fine too.

Shift it is - that is so strange though on every other version of Ubuntu I used over the last 3 years, my computer has always shown the Grub menu automatically.

One by one I'm picking off the things that are a problem in 12.04. You don't know how to map the spell check in Gedit to different keys do you?

For some reason, Shift+F7 no longer does anything.
    Thank you,
