Re: HOWTO: Can I use FreeNX with Ubuntu?

So a little while ago I posted in here about wanting to run FreeNX on my AMD64 Hoary installation, but not having the packages (nxagent and nxproxy) to do so. I think there were one or two people who had the same problem or interest.

Long story short, here is the how-to thread about getting those packages built from source: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=54417

And for those of you who just want a more simple "apt-get install", Tamir will soon (hopefully) be putting the necessary files up on his repository. See that thread here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=48905

Re: HOWTO: Can I use FreeNX with Ubuntu?

Has anyone had success running FreeNX on Breezy? I know this might not be the best place to post this, but i'm getting the same problem as posted by paulrd:

    Code:
Info: Using remote ZLIB data compression level 3.
Info: Using remote ZLIB stream compression level 6.
Info: No suitable cache file found.
    Info: Starting X protocol compression.
Warning: X connection failed with error 'Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key'.
Info: End of session requested by remote proxy.
Info: Shutting down the link and exiting.
I tried rebuilding this from source but I'm getting a number of C++ issues. I tried moving back to gcc-3.3 and still had problems building. Anyone have any ideas?

Re: HOWTO: Can I use FreeNX with Ubuntu?

I just added the repository and opened up my terminal window, typed sudo apt-get install freenx and it spewed out some message about broken links to nxagent and nxproxy.

    Is NoMachine messing things up?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Take care!

How did you guys manage to DOWNGRADE All packages I've found have the same version of NXSERVER - 1.4.0-03.
I got XFCE to work but it behaves really strange. To open a terminal window (gnome-terminal) takes about 1 minute. Same happens to almost all applications.
Meanwhile GNOME refuses to display anything on the screen.

Re: HOWTO: Can I use FreeNX with Ubuntu?

Has anyone had any luck in getting the Windows NX Client to work over putty? I'm at a client that has an http proxy so I create a SOCKS proxy using putty to tunnel through the http proxy, but when putty is running, I get the following error from the NX client....

    Code:
    ddxProcessArgument - Initializing default screens
    winInitializeDefaultScreens - w 1024 h 768
    winInitializeDefaultScreens - Returning
    ddxProcessArgument - screen - Found ``W D'' arg

_XSERVTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.X11-unix should be set to root
    _XSERVTransSocketCreateListener: listen() failed
    _XSERVTransSocketUNIXCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to create listener for local

    Fatal server error:
Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already running
I've tried running the Windows NX client within SocksCap32 to isolate the NX client from even realizing that a SOCKS proxy is running, but then I get the following error:

    Code:
    ddxProcessArgument - Initializing default screens
    winInitializeDefaultScreens - w 1024 h 768

I am able to run the Windows NX client successfully from my LAN at home with no issues. It's only when I try and run it over putty + OpenSSH at work. I understand that NX using SSH but I need to get through a HTTP proxy so I am using OpenSSH + putty to do that.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Re: HOWTO: Can I use FreeNX with Ubuntu?

Note that Seveas (Dennis Kaarsemaker - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DennisKaarsemaker ) has made packages for freenx both for Hoary and Breezy. Full instructions (very straightforward) at:

    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FreeNX

Take a look! Thank you, Dennis...

Re: HOWTO: Can I use FreeNX with Ubuntu?

The guide at the wiki has been updated recently to show how to change the sshd port, and also to cover installation of the client on Ubuntu systems:

    Thanks, everyone.
