Re: HOWTO: Can I use FreeNX with Ubuntu?

I was all excited when I read through Daz's guide - I've had FreeNX up and running on my Mandrake box for a while, and was looking forward to running it on Ubuntu 5.04.

One small problem though - my Ubuntu install is on an AMD64 box, and I saw earlier in the thread that there aren't packages for AMD64. I figured that was a month or so ago, perhaps they're in there now?

    Code:
    $ apt-cache search freenx
freenx - The FreeNX application/thin-client server based on NX technology
nxserver - The FreeNX application/thin-client server based on NX technology
    Cool !
    Code:
    $apt-get install freenx
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
freenx: Depends: nxagent (>= 1.4.0-m2-1) but it is not installable
Depends: nxproxy (>= 1.4.0-m2-1) but it is not installable
D'oh! apt-cache search doesn't turn up any results for nxagent, nxproxy, nxssh, etc. There is a package called nxsetup-kanotix, but I'm not sure if that would be useful.

    Any suggestions?

Did anyone get XFCE to work via freenx and can describe how you did it?
I only read from people using it, but never how it was done.

EDIT: OK, I'm an idiot... custom desktop with startxfce4 as command did it.

    Sorry Drain,

I forgot to mention that the guide was primarily for x86...

I'm on an AMD64 box too, but I found that there just aren't enough packages ready for x86-64 yet, so i'm running i386 hoary on my box. (It's a work machine, so I don't have the time to sort it out and start building packages myself at the mo - boss would kill me! )

Maybe when Breezy comes out I may start to try x86-64 ubuntu again...

    Hi Santo / MemoryDump,

Unfortunately, I don't think this is possible via NX - at least i've not been able to find out anything positive about this...

I think NX was more thought of for the idea of thin clients and the like (similar idea to Citrix) - allow a basic (cheap) PC to log-in to a much more powerful (expensive) server and have full functionallity for more users, and hence reduce hardware costs and admin time... I don't think it is in it's remit to move into things like connecting to current sessions etc.

Anyone found any info to the contrary?!?

Re: HOWTO: Can I use FreeNX with Ubuntu?

I am going a little insane at the moment.

I used to have FreeNX running, then I upgraded from Warty to Hoary.

I have uninstalled FreeNX server and re-installed it.

When ever I log in, I get the !M and then it just sits on a blank screen.

So far I have ascertained that:
    - FreeNX client has connected to FreeNX server but failed to initialise Gnome.
    - I can start a program in the Remote Window by typing "xterm -display localhost:1000"
    - I can start Gnome by typing "gnome-session" within the xterm window.

Has anyone got any ideas where to go next?

I've tried the two suggestions of:
    - Create a new user
    - Delete the .Xauthority files

    Thanks,

    LM

Re: HOWTO: Can I use FreeNX with Ubuntu?

I have never been able to get the suspend function working. I am using the backports packages, since attemping to use the Kanotix packages give dependency errors (the ones listed above by some people).

This would be extremely helpful to get suspend working. Any tips or ideas? Where could I start poking through log files, etc. The nomachine client on windows fails silently. Right after it says "starting X server", it pops up a brief screen of black with the nomachine logo in red on it.

I'm having the same problem as Im05 since my last dist-upgrade. Before that, it was working ok. From what i can see, gnome-session is started, the process is running but, just black. anything else just runs, like, for example xterm. Then if i start gnome-session once more in xterm it's shows up ok.

Good to know that some-one else in the same boat.

I had done exactly the same process, a DIST-UPGRADE.

I really don't want to have to do a wipe and load. Perhaps - when FreeNX installs it overwrites a config file (for gnome-session perhaps) that the DIST-UPGRADE did not overwrite when it upgraded the packages.

    Any thoughts anyone?

Re: HOWTO: Can I use FreeNX with Ubuntu?

I have the same problem, the !M window stays blank when using gnome-session. If I switch to xfce4-session, it works well. From the Windows version of the !M client, gnome-session works fine.

The backports are handy, but where are the sources? I can't find them on any of the mirrors. I need to rebuild nxclient for PPC, but if backports isn't going to support sources, I might as well start from scratch.
