    Re: Bring in the QQ!

Yes, and there are more options like that to come. I think Nick will present some of these soon, probably at UDS (not sure). I'm anxious to see what will be presented there. There are cool tools and stuff under development.

If you read Mark's announcement of QQ, there's no mention of humans in quality/testing (testers, triagers, etc). Developers can take care of quality in source code and there are tools to ensure that. And end-users can report bugs automatically via tools too, many times without even comprehending what will be reported and/or noticing they're doing that. The whole thing can happen automagically. And then there's the cloud, which helps hugely in all aspects.

That goes to prove that with enough money and coders, the need for community involvement gets minimal. We can't replace developers (yet!) but automation goes a long way

Pre-alpha, in my experience, is as good as it gets... the calm before the storm.
The period from Alpha1 to Alpha2 was the best IMO. I needed workarounds to run mostly anything lol. But I *think* this cycle will not be like that.

For us old hands I don't need to say this, even though the devs have promised that there will be as little breakage as possible, you should still have a backup installation of a stable version, just in case there is major breakage during the development cycle.

I've also put a revised sticky.

After just 2 days on the support parts of the forum, I ask: When will we replace end users?

It seems that the wrong people were ISO testing. All these having problems installing, upgrading should have been doing the testing.

    Regards.

It is a machine. It is more stupid than we are. It will not stop us from doing stupid things.

    are you a developer ?

    Yes, well...

I suppose it all depends on your definition of "best".

Chaos & Mayhem are my "best" friends, so yes, you would be correct, IMO.

Devs tend to be conservative when it comes to LTS releases. And, I judge Precise to have been a snooze.

I'm expecting "better" times ahead, with Ubu Q...

After a day long epic battle with both ubiquity and parted I finaly got a working version of precise release installed and updated to quantal . I really have doubts if precise was ready for release ! I think as we start the march to the next LTS a top priority above ALL else is to dump ubiquity and every individual part of it and produce an installer that actualy works most of the time not just on a lucky roll of the dice . The time to start that is now so that we will have a few non LTS cycles to get the bugs out .
if it ain't broke you haven't tweaked it enough

Hi Ron, I agree with you about the severity of the problems that impact installing Ubuntu. Have a look at these two links:

    - Count the number of mentions to Ubiquity. It's clearly the most mentioned package.
    https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/Relea...inalTestReport

    - Nonetheless, maybe it's time to add more critical functions to Ubiquity:
    https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubu...r-installation

So, glass half empty || half full. How do we look at that blueprint? I don't trust Ubiquity or Jockey at this point. I think they should be fixed before we even consider adding features to any of them.

My personal view: We don't really know what the focus will be on this cycle. Beautiful speeches, posts and etc are one thing, reality is another. Maybe we'll have yet another UI/UX-oriented cycle? Who knows. And, even if we don't, we risk having important and very basic bugs persisting once again.

That is, unless someone does something relevant, a coordinated effort. And I strongly believe we can be that someone. I think it's time for us to, as a newly formed, legacy-free, motivated team of experienced users, to step up and do some elite work. Put our brains together into a single project and have something huge to be proud of by the end of this cycle.

See my post in this thread at http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...0&postcount=58 . I mention what I consider to be the three most basic broken areas.

If we, together, could focus on these highly critical bugs for a while, those 3 "pillars" of the distro, we can greatly increase the chances of getting it fixed for QQ.

Next week I'll propose that to the team via Mailing List, along with a suggested schedule and some ideas for specific needs/tasks. All targeted at Ubiquity, Jockey, Plymouth. I am sure we can make a difference. We can do and achieve whatever we want to in Ubuntu. The only thing we need is to have enough people involved and working together for a single goal.

    Regards,
    Effenberg

I really hope QQ gets the 3.5 kernel.

First stage of Optimus support is supposed to land. I don't expect the necessary X work to make it thought.

edgers has been doing a great job lately -- keeping abreast of things.

    They're an odd lot!

Sometimes I won't use their PPA for months, because all it does is throw a wrench in the works. Other times, I couldn't live without them.

I can state, for a fact, that if it wasn't for edgers, Linux 3.4 wouldn't be working on this machine...
