I new and and confused. The update manager has a button to upgrade to 12.04.01 LTS. I am running a Starling star5 netbook with Unity desktop version 10.04 LTS (I think). Can I upgrade directly from 10.04 to 12.04? Surely the update manager wouldn't lead me astray?
Should I do a fresh install instead? Thanks.

It's theoretically possible to upgrade from 10.04.4 to 12.04.1 without reinstalling, but doing so often results in breakage. If you want to avoid headache, I strongly recommend you to do a clean install.
