Angry Radeon 9600 Mobility M10 configuration

OK, I've been trying for hours now to get the most out of my ThinkPad T42's GPU in 12.04, but to no avail. I finally got dynpm running for power management (sometimes jumpy, but OK), but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get AGP 4x turned on. I'm used to working in Xorg.conf and have NO idea how to do any of this KMS stuff... HELP!!!

There are NO proprietary drivers that will work with this Radeon card and any Ubuntu version newer than 8.10. So telling them to do this is useless.
    Ubuntu 20.04, Mint 19.10; MS Win10 Pro.
Will not respond to PM requests for support -- use the forums.
