Top Panel Does Not Autohide in GNOME classic/11.10

    Hey good evening,

I have Ubuntu 11.10 installed have always used gnome, recently, the past few weeks, the top taskbar does not autohide when checked to autohide in the alt preferences menu. I can't think of any software I've installed that would have affected this and I've looked at history of installations in Ubuntu Software Center but nothing really stands out - most things were automatic or in system updates. I've checked the dconf editor and everything looks good there too. Has anyone had a similar situation? Any info on what the problem might be?
