I want to switch to Ubuntu?

Hey guys, I hate Microsoft Windows and I am a student who wants to switch to Linux. Was wondering if the following programs work or if their are replacements?

Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Excel and Publisher
    Itunes
    Firefox and Chrome
    Dropbox
    VLC
Photoshop and Cinema 4D (Like Once a Month)
Ive heard of wine and dont know anything about it!

Thanks in advance for all the help!

Ubuntu comes with Libre Office, which can read and write MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel files. One thing to be aware of is that sometimes there are formatting issues.

    Hi

Dropbox and VLC both have native versions for Ubuntu. So you have no problems there.

There is no drop in replacement for itunes although there are applications that perform a similar job.

Here are some links to look at

    Kind regards

Hi mt605504. Welcome to the forums.

You won't have any problem with Firefox, Chrome and VLC. All of them are multiplataform applications, and work great in Ubuntu.

Take a look at this alternatives:
    • LibreOffice as a replacement for MS Office.
    • Gimp to almost replace Photoshop.

I hope that helps, and tell us how it goes.
    Regards.

I am a dual booting student and I have found that I need MS office . While working on group projects I have needed to send word documents and power point to other students . For my individual presentations media has to be sent to instructors for approval in some cases and they specify MSO only. If you are sure things like this won't come up take the plunge. Specific cad and math programs may be a requirement for some students also .

If you do not want to dual boot and find there are things you must do in Windows, then you can virtualize Windows in VirtualBox -- provided you have LICENSED copies of the Windows and Office installation disks. OEM system restore disks will generally not work.
