Question Wired Network Disconnected - You are offline in ubuntu 11.10

Hello, I am completely noob to the ubuntu..
have installed ubuntu 11.10 in my (Gigabyte)PC...

while installing it showed the error "Wired Network Disconnected - You are offline" a few times...
I jst ignored it, thought it would be b'coz of the running installation...
but now even after completely installing ubuntu the same error is displayed frequently...
Even though I have plugged the internet wire properly it shows the same error...
may I know why is so...
I want to connect to internet...
another point is that when I use windows I do not face any such problem..
I can easily access internet on windows...
will anyone please tell me what is wrong...
    please do guide me...

I have only username & password that my internet provider has provided me...
how can I connect to internet...??

If /etc/network/interfaces shows and nothing else except lines prefixed with #:
    Code:
    auto lo
    iface lo inet loopback
    Append:
    Code:
    auto eth0
    iface eth0 inet dhcp
To it (use nano as root).
    Now run:
    Code:
    sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

Network Manager should have an option for Auto eth0 that should be set to Connect automatically.

Re: Wired Network Disconnected - You are offline in ubuntu 11.10

    Nothing did happen...

    when I put the code
    /etc/network/interfaces

    output is
    bash: /etc/network/interfaces: Permission denied

also when I put the code
    sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

    output is
    * Running /etc/init.d/networking restart is deprecated because it may not enable again some interfaces
    * Reconfiguring network interfaces... [ OK ]

Still the same problem occuring "Wired Network Disconnected - You are now Offline"....

Also couldn't find option "Auto eth0" in network manager...
may be it is because of I am noob to the linux...

    Please help.......!!

    regards,

Re: Wired Network Disconnected - You are offline in ubuntu 11.10

I am having similar problems as well.
Talk to the IT guys here at work and they say I get disconnected because I am sending out several mac addresses to the main switch. This causes the switch to lock me out for a standard of 5 minutes (port security).

Are you also behind a large switch?

No. nothing is like this is happening in my case....

In my case the the network keeps on trying to connect and in the end shows an error stating "Wired Network Disconnected - you are now offline"...

I'm just not understanding what's missing or the problem is...

Re: Wired Network Disconnected - You are offline in ubuntu 11.10

By all indications in the output you posted, your wireless driver is installed and functioning correctly, and your connection should work. My first guess as to why it's not is that your network is not configured to use DHCP.

What output do you get from:
    Code:
    sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager stop
    sudo ifconfig eth0 up
    sudo dhclient eth0
If after typing these commands you are not online, it is likely that you need to set a static IP address. If this was already set up for you in Windows, that explains why Windows connects and Ubuntu does not.

Re: Wired Network Disconnected - You are offline in ubuntu 11.10

    Code: sudo /etc/init.d/network-manager stop

    Output:-
Rather than invoking init scripts through /etc/init.d, use the service(8)
    utility, e.g. service network-manager stop

Since the script you are attempting to invoke has been converted to an
Upstart job, you may also use the stop(8) utility, e.g. stop network-manager
    network-manager stop/waiting

    Code: sudo ifconfig eth0 up
    &
    Code: sudo dhclient eth0

    NO OUTPUT WAS SHOWN...!!

Network manager have auto-detected the mac address...
I put username & password that my internet provider have provided me in authentication...
Now it is not disconnected regularly.
But it asks me username & password to connect, on clicking on connect it tries to set up connection.
But fails to do so. It repeats 3 times after which it shows the error "Wired Network Disconnected - you are now offline".

What do you think this is happening because of..??
Also as you said "what should I do if this is occurring because of no Static IP problem"..??

    Help..........!!!!!

    Billaboy
