Grub will not boot Windows Vista

Okay, here is the deal. I installed Ubuntu 11.10 in October or so, so that it would dual boot on my laptop along with Windows Vista. I haven't had any problems with the set up since then. It would boot using the Windows boot loader which I noted was different from my desktop which would use Grub. Last week, Windows ran an update (because Windows friggin blows) and it caused me to not be able to boot in Ubuntu at all. I was slightly peeved but whatever. I reinstalled Ubuntu 11.10, doing nothing different than before, only now it uses Grub to boot. The problem is that now I cannot get Grub to boot Windows. I don't get any errors or anything. I can still access my files on my Windows user, so they are still there. When I tell it to boot Windows, the screen goes black, like it is trying for a few seconds, then it returns back to Grub.

In case you couldn't tell, I am not super efficient in Linux. I do know computers though! I work for an IT company, I just don't have a lot of experience with Linux. I need help with this ASAP, it is that point in the semester where I have stuff due and I need access to certain programs on my Windows partition that won't work with Ubuntu.

Re: Grub will not boot Windows Vista

You somehow installed grub over your Windows boot sector (/dev/sda3). Please review this to restore: http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawik...ms:Boot_Sector

It recommends testdisk, but if you use the Windows repair method then there is a typo in that link (bootrec instead of bootrect)

I ran the Testdisk but it did not work. I don't have a recovery disk for windows. I'm totally lost now.

Re: Grub will not boot Windows Vista

There used to be a free download of a Windows repair (only) cd, but due to copyright (meaning MS) they now charge $10.

But if you know someone with the same 32 or 64 bit any version you can make a repairCD.

Make your own Windows repairCD (not vendor recovery):
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/w...em-repair-disc
    http://forums.techarena.in/guides-tutorials/1114725.htm

Windows 7 repair USB, Also Vista if service pack installed
    http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-re...tion-dvd-disc/
    http://www.webupd8.org/2010/10/creat...usb-drive.html

I used the Wiondows repair USB to run chkdsk on my XP install and it worked better than the XP chkdsk. But it converted my boot sector from XP to Vista/7 type. I was able to use the repairCD to rewrite a XP boot sector.
Testdisk does have a rebuild a boot sector function. But I think it is only the XP version. That would then let you read the NTFS partition, but it would not be bootable until you repaired it with a Windows repairCD.
