    Re: Install Google Earth

I installed the Linux version of Google Earth last night. Google Earth did not seem to recognize my video at all, so it ran super slow in software emulation mode. Awful!

I just ran the uninstall script, and I thought I would check back later on fine tuning my Ubuntu hardware settings.

Has anyone gotten Google Earth for Linux to run well--fast and stable? I'm running Ubuntu 6.06 as a guest OS under VWware Workstation. Host is Windows XP running on a new computer (two weeks old).

    Thank you.

    Re: Install Google Earth

I see. But I have only a 1 GHz Intel Celeron and 512 MB RAM. And still GoogleEarth running smoothly on XP and very poorly in Ubuntu. I still hope that the problem is not in the hardware resources because if it is so, linux is loosing the main advantage: functioning well with less resources then Windows. I hope that we will not have to buy for linux systems "supercomputers" to have the same results as we can have with XP on cheap old PC-s...

    Re: Install Google Earth

I've got google earth running perfectly on Ubuntu 6.10 but there was a bit of a process to it.
I had to update the drivers for my ATI video card with the proprietry ATI drivers instead of the open source ATI driver since this seems to not support direct rendering (yet).
You can see if direct rendering is working with glxinfo from the command line.
    You should see
    name of display: :0.0
    display: :0 screen: 0
    direct rendering: Yes

    at the top.
    You may find http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthre...ight=howto+ati helpful.
Also, I found some advice somewhere on the forum to put the attached library in your google-earth folder, but if things are running real slow (i.e running at all) it's more likely a problem with direct rendering.

Worked wonders. Thanks. Only problem is gray areas when i try to add pins or generally when there are menus overlapping the main window. Basic functionality is there though, so I consider it a success.

    1. Open up a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal)
    2. Type in the following:

    Code:
    wget http://dl.google.com/earth/GE4/GoogleEarthLinux.bin
    sh GoogleEarthLinux.bin
The rest of the install is self explanatory, have fun!
Yeah uh, not so much. I ran the bin file with sudo and it crashed X. It would be helpful if someone with a working install would start a new thread with some better instructions. 13 pages of random issues is really not helpful. Thanks.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Were you able to fix it? How?
