I'm having the same problem. It worked fine on Dapper. I'm running Edgy now and GE just sticks on the splash screen.

When I run Google Earth, it runs very painfully slow. Any suggestions?

Re: Install Google Earth

Partial success with:

$ DISPLAY=:0 googleearth

with XGl this ends up creating a weird window that doesn't interact with the rest of the desktop... but at least it's there.

Re: Install Google Earth

Download and save this attachment (it is from fglrx 8.27.10), and put libGL.so.1 into the /usr/lib/googleearth directory.

I placed this in ~/google-earth and it at least got Google Earth initialized. However, Google Earth will only run in a software 3d emulation mode (meaning, it's not utilizing the 3d capabilities of my ATI Xpress 200M card). I have a healthy installation of xorg-driver-fglrx. Any idea as to how to get the 3d working correctly?

Thanks,
Jason

Re: Install Google Earth

Meanwhile I upgrades to Edgy, I'v got 3D with the ATI driver, I couldn't get to work the fgrlx driver and it looks like that the fgrlx driver does not work, at least no with a ATI Radeon 9000 Pro. Then I installed Google earth and everything went smooth... I even see my pizza oven in the backyard..

Re: Install Google Earth

I think googleearth is not ready for linux, only in some special cases... or linux is not ready for googleearth. On the windows boot on my system googleearth is working fast and shiny, in Dapper Drake, with 3D and direct renderin on, is functioning without error messages, but for any changes of the screen I must wait 20-25 minutes. So the best solution to trash googleearth from the linux boot and boot to XP...

I've got it running under Windows XP and Ubuntu Edgy on this box. It runs just fine in both Operating Systems. It might be slightly slower in Ubuntu but not much.
