Lightbulb Ubuntu Server on 1999 Dell machine

    Hi all,

I'm about to start a project of installing Ubuntu 11.10 server edition on an old 1999 Dell box. I haven't used the machine in years, but it is still working. It's got 300mb ram, and a 500mhz pentium 3 processor. It's pretty much the specs I use on most of the vms I have running windows. I'm planning to use it as an IRC server, with ssh and some other services.

I was wondering whether anyone else has tried this? Is there anything I should watch out for?

    Thanks in advance

Many people use old PC's or even servers for running a few basic services. I'd recommend the 10.10 LTS server release instead of 11.10 for your case however, because you are using such old hardware.

    Hi hughr2005.

It sounds very achievable. The lowest hardware I've install Ubuntu Server on was a P3 256Mb.

    Regards.

Hello hughr2005 , 10.04 is worth a try because of its long term support and stability .The minimum ram requirement is also not beyond yours , only 128 MB .
Have a look at the systems requirement section , you will find the below link helpful .

    Thanks everyone

I've got it running, and it's all working well. It struggles a bit with IRC and SSH at the same time, but most of the time it's pretty good.
