Re: Vote for GOG to add Linux versions of games they sell

GOG are giving away Torchlight for the next 48 hours. GOG at present do not support Linux as a platform by selling games for it but that does not mean that they will not sell games for Linux in the future. As GOG support Mac OS, the next obvious step would be to support Linux, so support for our favourite operating system can't be that far in the future. To prepare for that inevitable Linux launch, you can pick up Torchlight free of charge and free of DRM from GOG. As the game has a Linux client already in place, it will certainly be uploaded to GOG once they start supporting Linux. Why not vote on one of these while you're at it?

The Linux version of Torchlight wasn't made by Runic games, apparently. It may be on the Ubuntu Software Centre, but it's not officially a Linux port hence the reason why it's not available on Steam. I may be wrong, but my sources inform me correctly regarding the matter. I hope Runic Games do port both TL 1&2 to Linux.

I just found out that GamersGate supports Linux as well. Just look at titles such as The Raven - Legacy of a Master Thief and Aeon Command. It's nothing major like with Steam, but it is a start. C'mon GOG, get to it already.

    Just voted.
I have a bunch of good old games in GOG.com that I would like to play as natives... don't we all.

I will admit that I find it amusing when I hear trolls b*tching about Steam with its (minimal) DRM, while praising GOG.com (I am a customer of GOG.com), which doesn't support GNU/Linux at all, to the skies regarding their DRM-free Windows and Mac (only) games.

Again, at least Steam fully supports GNU/Linux, and is (obviously) porting as many games as they can to our OS. Stand in line and wait for GOG.com to support GNU/Linux.

Thank you for the negative attitude, Nancy. How long did it take Steam to finally support Linux again? It hasn't even been a year yet since Steam arrived on Linux and trolls are already hailing Steam to the heavens. Yes, Steam is great and Valve is doing an amazing job in bringing games to Linux, but I will continue to prefer gaming free of DRM. Please inform yourself of what a troll actually is as having a different opinion to yours does not equate to being a troll. Please continue to enjoy your "minimal" DRM and pray that it will remain minimal.

    Good grief.

I hadn't meant anyone on Ubuntu Forums when I spoke of trolls; there are plenty of other forums I've read some pretty nasty (and, IMHO, unfounded) things said about Steam. Desura did beat Steam to the Linux audience, and they do sell games with some DRM in the form of keycodes; even Illwinter uses keycodes before their games will run. I wasn't even complaining, as I said, about anyone here, but about GOG.com's refusal to support Linux, despite a largish petition asking them to do so.

Yes, Gabe Newell wants to make money from Linux users. The Humble Bundles have for four years been making money (for charity) from Linux users, something that Newell and others noted. Steam has literally millions of users logged on at any given time; are all the users sheep who will be denied gameplay from Steam?

In Steam you don't actually own the game, you just have their permission to play it, which can be revoked any time, additionally some games may have DRM that limits the number of installs. On Gog, you buy a DRM free game and you can do anything you want with it: burn it on a CD/DVD and install it as many times as you wan't. Nobody can revoke this copy, you own it forever.

These are the main reasons for me to choose GOG over Steam and I don't have the problem with waiting for Linux support. If they managed to get System Shock 2 re-released, they can also manage to add Linux support. Maybe they are thinking about it right now as I'm writing this post. Just be patient ...

Re: Vote for GOG to add Linux versions of games they sell

Except for GOG and the Humble Bundles, really, every game I've ever bought has been a license to use that software, and I've been a computer gamer for 30 years, starting with a VIC-20, then a C-64, then an Amiga, etc. It was a sad but inescapable reality that I didn't own the game I had bought. I certainly celebrate GOG's insistence of no DRM, and I have bought a lot (30+) of games from them. I am disappointed at their lack of Linux support, and it has affected my opinion of them.

I value Steam for what it is, and it is what it is, an avoidable semi-DRM that allows me to play games I never thought I would see in native Linux versions. Nobody is forced to use Steam, after all. I understand Richard Stallman's dislike of Steam, and closed-source software in general; I agree with many of his opinions. My using Steam for Linux is a personal expression of freedom for me. I support anyone who doesn't use Steam on philosophical grounds for their opinion, and their choice. I do object to being flamed ("Nancy?!") for liking Steam, and complaining about posts on other forums where I read lots of nasty things said about Steam and its users.

Enough of the bickering. I long ago signed the petition on GOG to add Linux support; I'm dismayed at the response so far from them.
