Ungroup applications of same type when ALT+TAB is pressed

    In Ubuntu 11.10 with Gnome:

Is it possible to have different icons for different instances of the same application when alt+tab is pressed (e.g. for different LibreOffice documents )?

Personally I love this feature and I think you will also.

If you hit the up (or down arrow, I can't remember which off the top of my head) you see all your group expanded in a really great layout.

This is probably my favorite part of 11.10. Hopefully you will too.

    Try it out.

I know that it can be expanded. But it is faster for me not to use the mouse..
Maybe if there is a way to select different apps without using the mouse...

The way I explained doesnt require the mouse.

    Hit Alt+Tab.
Let go of Tab (continue holding Alt)
While still holding Alt hit Tab until you get to the group you want.
While still holding Alt hit the down arrow.

You will now get a great display of all of the windows in that group and can arrow over to whichever you want.

No mouse needed and super fast to switch windows.

This is not the intended way to do this. You alt-tab between applications and then alt-<key above tab> between windows of the same application. <key above tab> is usually the backtick key on (most?) US keyboards. If you want to switch windows immediately in the current app then you can alt-backtick immediately.

The alt-tab/backtick scheme I quote here is how gnome-shell, Unity, & Mac OS X all work now (by default) so I suggest you get used to it. I.e. it is an improvement on the old alt-tab "all windows" switching.

ALT+Backtick(key above TAB) does not switch windows for me however I use english US Qwerty keyboard (most common one).

I have to press first few times ALT TAB to come to the grouped window and then ALT backtick to show the subwindows which is not user friendly.

IMHO this question is not really answered, it just tells you how to access the list of items at the bottom of the screen.
What is required is the UN-Grouping of the list.
    See screenshot, the browser list.

I use the following gnome extension to get what I think the OP was asking for. Using this, when you press Alt+Tab, you will get an icon for each and every window that is open. You can configure it to only show programs open on the current workspace also.
