    Dell XPS 13 ultrabook compatibility

    Hello.

Now that the new Dell XPS 13 ultrabook is out I open this post to discuss about Ubuntu installation & compatibility.
Somebody is planning to buy and install Ubuntu in this nice ultrabook?

It would be nice to make a review about:
    - Overall performance
    - Peripherals (wifi, ports)
    - suspend/hibernate
    - Battery life with ubuntu
    - media buttons
    - boot speed
    etc.

I hope that some brave of you dare to buy and test it with ubuntu

Guess you didn't notice that there is a Dell Ubuntu support forum here. You would do better posting this there.
    Ubuntu 14.04, Mint 17; MS Win 8.1.
Will not respond to PM requests for support -- use the forums.

Re: Dell XPS 13 ultrabook compatibility

I'm planning to buy the dell XPS 13 ultrabook and install ubuntu, but i'm new to Ubuntu and would like to wait until somebody tests it. I don't think it takes long. If you know about anybody testing it or having it installed already tell him/her to share the experience.

By the way, i've tried to find this post in Dell thread and couldn't find it...

Yes, it is true. I have opened one new thread in the Dell section:

Re: Dell XPS 13 ultrabook compatibility

I managed to install Xubuntu 11.10 on the base Dell XPS 13 model without any issues that I have found. There are power consumption issues and the battery does not last as long as it should. But as I understand it, a lot of power issues will be resolved in 12.04 due out in a month or two.

And which XPS 13 are you using? The i5 i7? Which hard drive?

    Thanks for the help

Re: Dell XPS 13 ultrabook compatibility

    Hey All,

I've put Xubuntu 11.10 on the Dell XPS 13 128gb i5 version. I'm noticing the following issues out of the box:

    1. Unable to adjust brightness
    2. two finger scrolling does not work
    3. I'd like to enabled "tap to click" instead of using the click pad. not sure how.
    4. turning off bluetooth via nm turns off wireless

That's all I've got so far. I'm looking into xorg options for the intel i915 now.

Re: Dell XPS 13 ultrabook compatibility

ok, to fix brightness, run as root:

    echo 0 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

Then the keyboard brightness controls work.

EDIT: I put this script into /etc/init/backlight.conf:

    Code:
    start on runlevel [23]
    task
    exec /bin/echo 0 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
It works when I run "sudo start backlight" but it doesn't happen on boot. Not sure why. I'm new to upstart. Any tips?
