    I don't think you have been compromised.

    Here is a sticky from the Security sub-forum that you may want to read http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=510812. Although it is old, it has some good links on how to detect intrusions.

    Use whatever OS or desktop works for you. Dual boot or use VMs if you want. Backup your computer regularly, and definitely before upgrading, partitioning, or installing an OS.
