Unable to Mount (Some) Recently Burned DVDs

For several years I've been happily burning files to DVDs using k3b. A couple of months ago I began encountering a problem that now has me completely bewildered. Some recently burned DVDs will not mount in Ubuntu, although they seem to mount fine (and pass integrity tests) on several Macs. In fact -- and here's where it seems really weird to me -- these problem disks mount fine in WinXP running in VirtualBox on this same machine. Yes, that's right -- the disk is burned in Ubuntu, but Ubuntu won't mount it, even though XP, running as a guest OS, will.

I've tried everything I can think of -- shortening file names, volume names. etc. What could cause such an anomaly?

I'm interested in hearing about this as well. I've encountered a similar situation with DVDs that played fine in 8.04 not playing in 10.04
